The Power to Overcome Our Everyday Battles

Number 48 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” The miracles and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!

When I went to the church I pastored I came with the understanding we were going to change things big time. The church had dwindled to a place it was either change or die.

I met early on with the Executive Board, a group of eight core leaders. One evening in our living room I said to them, “We have the opportunity to make a difference. We can change the direction of this church and see lives impacted eternally.”

All of them were excited about being a part of something that would make an eternal difference.

Then I said, “But realize we just declared war on the evil one. And it will be a real war. So you need to put on God’s armor every day. And trust in him to keep you safe and give you wisdom.”

Most took me seriously.

But within six months, one had a complete psychological breakdown. And within a year another had resigned.

Jesus gives a similar warning as he sends his disciples into their first ministry.

“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10: 16 NLT)

They had the opportunity to literally change the world. They would see miracles. And they would be under constant pressure and attack.

We have that same incredible opportunity.

No matter who we are and what we do for a living we can be involved in life changing ministry. Frankly, I’m amazed God entrusts such important work to people like me who are so ill equipped. I mean it really seems there should have been a better plan.

But he also warns us that we’ll be like brain dead sheep wandering into a group of wolves. Not their best move.

Yet, he equips us even in that.

He says he’ll give us shrewdness. Literally insight, understanding, wisdom, leading.

I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen that happen when I pastored and as I write. Just the right thought at the right time.

And he promises we’ll grow peace loving also.

We’ll love people in a way we simply never have before. Even those who are unlovable. You know like some of our favorite relatives.

What a powerful combination for the daily battles we face.

We’ll face battles often but we face them with power.

How have you seen this?
