Quora Post: “How Do You Keep Your Faith in Situations in Which God Doesn’t Help You?”

I’m over at Quora today.  Please join me as I answer that question:

“I’ve struggled with this too.  I’ve prayed specifically for something I really wanted yet God didn’t answer my prayer the way I asked.

Yet, frankly looking back now I’m often glad he didn’t answer some of those prayers. . . .”

First, obviously, believing he doesn’t exist or if he does he’s some impersonal life force that has no awareness of my existence. So really there’s little point in praying.

Second, believing perhaps he does exist but he’s way too busy with major world issues to be concerned about my day to day problems.

Third, if he exists he’s like an omnipotent traffic cop just waiting for me to screw up so he can slap me with a ticket. Frankly you just want to stay off his radar.

Fourth and I see this one in the church all the time. God sends trouble my way to test me so I can prove whether I’m really faithful. That one really irritates me. [Read more…]

Unexpected Answers to Prayers

Let’s be real. We all face struggles that simply seem insurmountable.

A health issue that can’t be fixed with a couple of pills.

A marriage that implodes no matter we do.

A job that dead ends no matter how hard you work.

Financial setbacks beyond of your control.

And I see commonly one of three responses.

“I don’t need any help. I can fix it myself.”

Or, “I don’t know why God did this to me and I want nothing to do with him.”

Or, “God here is exactly how I want you to fix this.”

The problem with all three? They often end in frustration and despair.

Because the first two leave God out of the equation so he won’t answer.

And the third makes God the genie in the bottle. And when God answers in unexpected ways either we don’t recognize it or we’re angry because it wasn’t according to our plan so in a way we don’t accept it. [Read more…]

How to Make Sure Your Prayers aren’t Answered

I watch Christians head down dead end roads in prayer. I’ve driven there myself.

We’re told early on, “God will answer your prayers.” No disclaimers. So we try it out. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not so much. We think, “Maybe I just need to figure out the right formula.”

So we keep throwing out prayers hoping some stick. And you know some do. Just enough to give us a little encouragement and keep us mostly confused. [Read more…]

When You Pray and the Sky Seems Frozen

Let’s face it. We all get slammed at times with the unexpected and the difficult.

We’re cruising along peacefully and suddenly wham we’re blindsided.

It may be a challenge in our marriage.

We get laid off from our job or our business contracts.

We get a dreaded phone call from our doctor.

And suddenly our world turns upside down.

So we pray but the sky seems like the underside of a frozen lake. [Read more…]

How to Pray So It Works Most of the Time

I can tell you all about prayer that doesn’t work. I know, just what you’re looking for.

Before I committed my life to God I prayed sometimes.

I’d screw up (not that unusual). Get in a jam. Try to finagle my way out. Screw it up worse.
And finally think, “Well, why not try praying? What have I got to lose?” [Read more…]
