The Critical Ingredient to Healing a Relationship

A few years ago I had a major blowout with a friend when we were working together in a non-profit.  To be honest to this day I don’t know why.  She suddenly grew very angry.  Our work relationship and friendship imploded.

When the project concluded I called her one afternoon and said, “I really don’t know what went wrong but I’m sorry for hurting you whatever I did.”

She responded simply, “Thank you.”

To say the relationship remained strained would be a gross understatement. [Read more…]

Sunday Music: “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2

A fabulous song by one of the most popular rock bands of all time.  Interestingly they describe writing it as a “gospel song.”

Listen carefully to the words and enjoy this moving rendition of it.

Happy Sunday!

How to Make Peace in a Church

Jerry Seinfeld had a great line, “People–they’re the worst!”

I would modify it, “Christians–they’re the worst!”

Ever feel that way?  Man I have. [Read more…]

What To Do When Your Church Splits

A church in our city has bred more church splits than any church I’ve know.  They drove out the first pastor I knew who was a great teacher.  The next one they didn’t like any better.  So when he wouldn’t leave a core group gutted the church and started a “mission church.”

That spinoff has split several times since.  And those spinoffs have imploded. [Read more…]

Sunday Music: “Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)” by Chris Tomlin

A wonderful rendition of perhaps the most loved hymn in history.  And a great reminder of the freedom we have in God’s amazing grace.

I hope you enjoy this on your Sunday.

Finding Elusive Peace

WT Stressing Out

“For he himself is our peace.”  (Ephesians 2: 14 NIV)

Finding peace.   Isn’t it really one of the core drivers for most of us?  I mean inner peace, spiritual peace, relational peace.  Aren’t most of us obsessed with finding it?

And it’s so frustratingly elusive.  It comes and goes with exasperating frequency.

So what do we do? [Read more…]

Never Alone Again

“Don’t forget that you Gentiles used to be outsiders. You were called “uncircumcised heathens” by the Jews, who were proud of their circumcision, even though it affected only their bodies and not their hearts. In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope.  But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.”  (Ephesians 2: 11-13 NLT)

I look back in amazement that when I gave my life to Jesus I near instantaneously connected with a whole new group of friends.

At the time I was living in a fraternity house surrounded by “brothers.”  Continuous parties,  girls and drinking. Yet, in many ways I felt alone.  Sure lots of friends but few I could open up to. [Read more…]

“A Spaceman Came Traveling” by Celtic Woman

A fun high energy song to lift your Sunday.  Yet the message is fascinating to me.

What would we think if Jesus, unannounced, came today as he did 2000 years ago?  Would he seem like a spaceman?

Hope you enjoy this song and it brightens your Sunday.

Created For Greatness

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”  (Ephesians 2: 10 NLT)

I’m not surprised so many people don’t go to church.  Actually, sometimes I’m surprised by the number that do.

I mean so much is taught about how worthless we are and unworthy of God’s love.

And while the latter is true the former is false.

Yet, when someone focuses on that they don’t see their life as an adventure but rather as an ordeal.  They see themselves as someone God’s just putting up with. [Read more…]
