When You Just Feel Like Giving Up

Number 41 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!

A few days ago I was talking on the phone with a friend who’s been through more than her share. Several hip surgeries, two replacements, cancer and recently a knee replacement. Yet, through it all she can laugh and see the bright side.

I said, “So how’s your knee?”

She replied, “Actually I’m walking well. But I was in the kitchen a couple of days ago and didn’t realize my dog was behind me. I fell over him and the doctor thinks I’ve fractured a vertebrae. I just can’t seem to catch a break.”

First time I’d ever heard her down.

I imagine we can all relate. We’ve had days when we’re worn out then one more thing hits us. And we think, “Ugh, not something else.”

So maybe we go to church and that Sunday hear, “God is just testing your faith.”

I’ve wanted to scream, “Enough already! I’m a spiritual wimp, ok?”

Three Reactions to a Miracle

Number 40 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!

I was having lunch with a friend who’s an atheist. We sat in the restaurant patio on a warm fall afternoon discussing belief in God.

Sweeping his arm he said, “I look around at all of this nature and the cosmos and I don’t see God anywhere.”

I responded, “I look around at all of this and I see God everywhere.”

A few years ago I went through a serious medical issue that was misdiagnosed by my doctor. I deteriorated for months with no cure in sight. Then a couple of “coincidences” led me to discover the core issue and a natural cure for it.

When I shared my good news with friends several responded, “Wow, what luck!”

Yet, I’ve responded often, “No, what a miracle.”

We attended a church for a while that taught, “Miracles are not applicable for today.”

And you know what? They proved their theory correct. They never saw miracles.

Some Keys to Seeing a Miracle

Number 39 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!

Let’s be honest. There are times we all need a miracle.

I mean some challenges just seem impossible. And we’d really like God’s intervention even if we’re not sure we believe in it.

Frankly, I’ve prayed for people and seen miracles. Hey, I’ve seen miracles in my own life.

But I’ve also prayed and nothing miraculous happened. Or at least I never saw it.

So I’ve often wondered, “What’s the difference?  Why sometimes a miracle and sometimes seemingly zilch?”

In addition I’ve seen some super saints prayed for and nothing.

And I’ve seen some who would at best be considered marginally spiritual and boom something amazing happen.

Yet, what concerns me also is what comes out of that.

Sometimes people give up. They think, “It’s all bogus or I just don’t have enough faith.”

Or the other side, “Hey, I prayed and God answered exactly like I asked. Wow, this is so cool.” And it is right up until God doesn’t pop out of the bottle next time like they expect.

So it’s left me wondering, “What are the keys to seeing a miracle?”

When Healing is Far More than Health

Number 38 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!

I love this story of Jesus because it touches so many levels of hurting all of us experience.

kneeling

A woman had a physical disease that caused her menstrual flow to continue for 12 years. In addition to the pain and exhaustion she was also an outcast. Anyone she touched became ceremonially unclean so she could have no contact with those she loved.

She also spent her life savings going to doctors only nothing worked and some of the side effects left her even worse.

I think we all can relate. We have a problem that’s gone on for a long time with little solution in sight.

We may feel isolated from those we love because they’re worn out from it also. And frustrated we can’t go and do the things we  enjoy.

Sunday Music: “Remember When It Rained” by Josh Groban & Judith Hill

Wow!  What a powerful song and a beautiful rendition.

This is one of my favorite Josh Groban songs.  As I listen to the words they just touch my soul.

“Tears of hope run down my skin.

Tears for you that will not dry.

They magnify the one within.

And let the outside slowly die.”

I hope it encourages you on your Sunday.

The Trouble with Miracles–Part 2

Number 37 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!

This post builds on the previous one so if you haven’t read it I encourage you to do that now.

I’ve seen miracles. Yep, full up unexplainable miracles.

I’ve prayed for people with incurable diseases and on a few occasions seen them healed.

Now that’s really cool and I could probably become famous except that I’ve also prayed for others and they eventually died.

That for me is the irritating thing about miracles.

They simply don’t always occur.

So some pastors teach that miracles aren’t valid today. They ended with the apostles so we really can’t expect them.

Others say if you don’t see them you simply don’t have enough faith. Whip up more faith. See the miracle.

But both of these responses leave people feeling helpless and hopeless. I mean either miracles can’t happen or I’m not super-spiritual enough to see them.  Either way ends in defeat and frustration. [Read more…]

The Trouble with Miracles–Part 1

Number 36 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!

When I pastored a church there was no end of people with needs. People wanting prayer for physical illnesses, broken relationships, addictions, emotional distress, financial struggles.

With a prayer team I met with those wanting prayer after each service in our chapel. We asked God for miracles sometimes. And frankly we saw them.

People were healed amazingly. Estranged relationships were restored. Addictions overcome. People found peace who struggled with depression.

But sometimes miracles didn’t happen. And I also saw miracles occur that later unwound.

Frankly, it left me bewildered.

To this day I don’t have a clear understanding of why God works miraculously sometimes and other times he doesn’t. So if you’re looking for an all conclusive formula I don’t have it. But I think there are some similarities with the miracles Jesus performed. And there are also challenges.

In this story a man named Jairus hunts out Jesus to heal his young daughter who’s dying.

Jairus was a religious leader. One of the few who had anything to do with Jesus. Yet, he’s desperate and believes Jesus can heal his daughter if he’ll only come to his house.

But there were challenges ahead.

So challenge one, putting aside his pride and potential humiliation he comes to Jesus as he’s teaching. He pushes his way into the center of the crowd where he kneels and asks Jesus to come and heal his daughter. So Jesus goes with him.

Challenge two, on the way Jairus’ servant meets him and says, “Your daughter died a few minutes ago so don’t bother the teacher any longer.”

Jesus responds, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.”

Challenge three, they entered the house filled with people wailing. Until you’ve seen a funeral in the Middle East you don’t understand wailing.

So in the midst of the screeching Jesus says to Jairus, “Have the people put outside.” And Jairus does.

Challenge four, Jesus went to the room where the little girl lay dead. No fooling dead.

Then it says, “Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she stood up!” (Matthew 9:25 NLT)

Boom! The miracle happened.

Challenge five, those who saw it told everyone they knew even those who ridiculed them. And the news spread like a flood.

Next time I want to draw some conclusions from these challenges.

I don’t know all the answers but I can tell you this.

I’ve seen miracles. And they’re always challenging.

What are your thoughts about the challenges of miracles?

Please share your thoughts on Facebook, Twitter or email me. Thanks.

Sunday Music: “Brave” by Josh Groban

What an encouraging and beautiful song.

We all have those times of discouragement and worry.  And this song reminds us of the power we can find to overcome.

I hope it brightens your Sunday.

Come to the Party!

I’m giving up okra for Lent.  I’m all in.

Of course I don’t like okra anyway. That’s why I’m giving it up for Lent. And after Lent also.

Frankly, I don’t get the whole Lent thing. I mean does God really care that I like chocolate? Really? So the vitality of my relationship with him is dependent on giving up say chocolate for a few weeks?

See, I think we all have enough real issues. I find the world downright scary, frustrating and depressing all on its own at times. I don’t feel a need to add a layer of irritation to it.

Yet, isn’t that what we do often with religion? We make up rules to impress God that don’t impress him and only make us miserable.

And the folks outside of the church? They look on and think, “Yeah, no thanks.”

And the saddest part? That wasn’t what Jesus showed us.

Discovering God Apart from Religion

Number 34 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!

I talk often with people turned off by religion. They view it as trying to following a bunch of oppressive rules to impress a God they’re not sure exists. So they really have little interest in it.

Frankly though I see an opposite and more insidious perspective. Religious people who attend services regularly and follow the rules “at least better than most others.” They’d never admit it but they really don’t see a need for God’s grace.

Yet, both miss the relationship with God. No, I’m not making judgment calls about who’s saved and who isn’t. I’m just saying they miss out on the intimate relationship they could have with God and the soul peace that comes out of it.

And frankly, I don’t speak from a distance. I’ve lived both extremes and experienced the emptiness they bring.
