Sunday Music: “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack

A little more country than usual but I like this video and the message of the song.

She is singing to her children but it’s a great reminder that this life is meant for dancing.

I hope you enjoy this on your Sunday and today you kick it up.

Unexpected Answers to Prayers

Let’s be real. We all face struggles that simply seem insurmountable.

A health issue that can’t be fixed with a couple of pills.

A marriage that implodes no matter we do.

A job that dead ends no matter how hard you work.

Financial setbacks beyond of your control.

And I see commonly one of three responses.

“I don’t need any help. I can fix it myself.”

Or, “I don’t know why God did this to me and I want nothing to do with him.”

Or, “God here is exactly how I want you to fix this.”

The problem with all three? They often end in frustration and despair.

Why?

Because the first two leave God out of the equation so he won’t answer.

And the third makes God the genie in the bottle. And when God answers in unexpected ways either we don’t recognize it or we’re angry because it wasn’t according to our plan so in a way we don’t accept it. [Read more…]

God Rocks #20: Finding Release from Worry

Part of the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of the awesome blessings God gives us each day. I hope it encourages you today!

An epidemic of worry is raging.

Sales of anxiety and depression medication have increased exponentially over the last several years. Today they drive billions in revenue.

And that’s only a slice of those suffering from worry and anxiety.

What about just your garden variety? Worrying about losing your job? Worrying about your struggling child? Worrying about the questionable results of your lab report? Worrying about how to keep your marriage together?

And how do we fix those? Sometimes a little too much alcohol. Staying absorbed in way too much TV. Racing from church service to service. Working ourselves to a frazzle. Or just trying to ignore the problems.

But at some point when the buzz and distraction wears off the problems still loom and the worry creeps in again.

I know I’ve lived there. Heck, occasionally I still live there. [Read more…]

God Rocks #19: Surprising Abundance

Part of the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of the awesome blessings God gives us each day. I hope it encourages you today!

The church is at war about whether we should expect abundance and prosperity in this life or not.

One camp says, “If you claim it God will deliver it. Whatever you want state it and God will fulfill it.”

The other camp recites their motto, “If it doesn’t play in Calcutta it isn’t true.” In other words, “If what you’re expecting isn’t the same in the most destitute of circumstances then it’s not truth.”

Yet, the problem I see with both of these positions is they leave people frustrated and discouraged.

The first one puts God in a bottle as a genie and us as the master. And frankly God doesn’t play that role so well. So when it fails people think God failed.

And the second view leaves people expecting little in this life beyond subsistence. Which frankly isn’t very attracting.

Sunday Music: “Awake” by Josh Groban

I love this song and its title.  What a great thought as we end this year and enter the next that we do so “awake”.

The lyrics have so many layers of meaning that instead of giving you my observations I invite you to simply listen, enjoy and make your own.

I hope this song blesses you on your Sunday.

Advent #4: Experiencing the Love of Christmas

Christmas amplifies loneliness. It doesn’t create it but it certainly magnifies it.

For some people as they see others enjoying family and friends it brings them face to face with their own emptiness. It’s one reason Christmas is so hard for so many.

During the year it’s easier to stay busy with work, hobbies and volunteer activities. The loneliness may hide in the shadows but if you stay busy enough you can keep it at bay.

But at Christmas, when everything slows down, many are brought face to face with their emptiness.

And so for a few days they have to deal with the deep hollow in their hearts. [Read more…]

Advent #3: Healing for the Hurts of Christmas

A short series in Advent focusing on a few significant snapshots of the Christmas story and the amazing gifts they reveal.

Christmas Eve is both joyful and difficult for me.

After we were married and had children we celebrated Christmas Eve with my family.

Early evening we attended candlelight service at church then went to my parents home. We were greeted with eggnog and appetizers. Then in the family room in front of a blazing fire we’d open gifts. Christmas was big for my mom so she always bought lots.

Our kids giggled with excitement and loved grandma’s.

After gifts we ate dinner and dessert.

What great memories.

When my parents both died in 2004, it left a hole that quite frankly still has never been filled up.

I understood firsthand how people struggle so much with Christmas.

Missing the fond memories or mourning never having had them. [Read more…]

Sunday Music: “A Strange Way to Save the World” by Mark Harris

A beautiful and thoughtful song sung from the perspective of Joseph.

I can’t imagine all that must have been going through his mind but this song I think captures some of it well.

I hope you enjoy this on your Sunday before Christmas.

Advent #2: Discovering Surprising Joy at Christmas

A short series in Advent focusing on a few significant snapshots of the Christmas story and the amazing gifts they reveal.

Christmas without a doubt is the most conflicted holiday.

For many it’s a time of joy and celebration. Watching the magic through the eyes of a child. Connecting with family and friends.

Yet, for many others it’s depressing.

Those grieving the loss of a loved one who won’t be at Christmas.

Those apart from their loved ones because of circumstances beyond their control.

Those recently divorced and experiencing Christmas alone.

Add to that the non-stop activities that many of us get caught up in which in the moment are fun but can leave us exhausted. And when the buzz wears off the depression returns even worse.

And Christmas so often disappoints because it just never seems to live up to the hype.

We see this conflict in the Christmas story.
