How to Release Confidence

Do you ever feel like the world constantly bombards us with, “You’re just not good enough.”

I mean parents tell their kids, “If only you were more gifted.”

In school the in-group says, “You’re just not cool enough.”

Prestigious colleges say, “You’re not smart enough.”

Then as adults somehow the car we drive, the house we live in, the vacations we take, “Well they’re just not trendy enough.” [Read more…]

Finding Peace Even When You Doubt

There was a time I lived far away from God.

I mean I hoped he existed.  When I was in a jam I’d pray.  Kind of hedging my bets.

But I really didn’t know for sure.  Other than weddings I frankly had no interest in going to church.

I was living my life the way I wanted.  Fast and furious in a fraternity.  I really didn’t want God interrupting that.

But I also felt an emptiness deep inside.  Never could stop running.  Had only fleeting moments of peace. [Read more…]

What To Do When Your Church Splits

A church in our city has bred more church splits than any church I’ve know.  They drove out the first pastor I knew who was a great teacher.  The next one they didn’t like any better.  So when he wouldn’t leave a core group gutted the church and started a “mission church.”

That spinoff has split several times since.  And those spinoffs have imploded. [Read more…]

Finding Elusive Peace

WT Stressing Out

WT Stressing Out

“For he himself is our peace.”  (Ephesians 2: 14 NIV)

Finding peace.   Isn’t it really one of the core drivers for most of us?  I mean inner peace, spiritual peace, relational peace.  Aren’t most of us obsessed with finding it?

And it’s so frustratingly elusive.  It comes and goes with exasperating frequency.

So what do we do? [Read more…]

What A New Life Looks Like

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”  (Ephesians 2: 4-5 NIV)

In high school and college I struggled with depression.   I could be ecstatic one moment and an hour later crash into a darkness that would linger for a couple of days.

It grew steadily worse in college but I never told anyone.  I come from a family that you just “suck it up” and fix your problems. [Read more…]

Craziness!

“Yes, in the past you lived the way the world lives, following the ruler of the evil powers that are above the earth. That same spirit is now working in those who refuse to obey God.”  (Ephesians 2: 2 NCV)

I’m sure you’ve heard the famous definition of insanity, “Continuing to do the same things and expecting a different result.”

Just take a look around if you want to see insanity.  Rampant divorce, epidemic depression, cratering health, prescription drug sales reaching new highs.

And this in the most affluent society in history. [Read more…]

Finding Joy When Face to Face With Death

“The promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”  (Ephesians 1:14 NIV)

If you’ve had a parent, child, sibling or close friend die I would guess you’ve stopped and wondered, “What really comes after this life?  Is Heaven real?  Am I going there?  Is my loved one there?”

All very real and normal questions.   And nothing wrong with that. [Read more…]

Finding Confidence In a World Out of Control

“This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head.”  (Ephesians 1: 10 GNT)

We live in a world that seems out of control.

Mad men threatening nuclear holocaust.  Countries stealing territory and daring others to stop them.  Terrorists killing each other and threatening to kill us.

Our government spying on us, lying, attacking if our views differ from theirs. [Read more…]

Let’s Celebrate

“He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.”  (Ephesians 1:6   The Message)

We’re all bombarded by the negative.  Assaulted by news sensationalized to make us angry or afraid.

Pressured with our jobs, health, marriage, kids, finances.

Then when we finally tune out and settle down to watch TV we see more hatred and mayhem in an evening than most soldiers will see in a tour of duty.

And it leaves us down, depressed and upset. [Read more…]

Freedom From Our Failures

“Even before the world was made, God had already chosen us to be his through our union with Christ, so that we would be holy and without fault before him.”  (Ephesians 1:4 GNT)

So many people live with regrets and the unresolved pain of personal moral failure.  Guilt over letting  themselves down and hurting others they care about.  Some psychologists feel unresolved guilt is one of the leading causes of emotional illness. [Read more…]
