Joy in the Midst of Rejection

“Rejoice and be happy when you are persecuted because of me because you have a great reward waiting in heaven.  And remember they persecuted all of my prophets who were before you.”  (Matthew 5: 12)

Lord,

Feeling attacked because I follow you hurts,

But looking forward to my reward in heaven fills me with joy.

If I am rejected let it be only because I reflect you,

And in the hurt fill me with your inexplicable joy.

Amen

Feeling Loved When You Feel Hurt

“God will bless you when people insult you, persecute you and say evil lies against you because you are my follower and they see my presence in you.”  (Matthew 5: 11)

Father,

It is hard to be rejected because I follow you and you are in me,

Yet, to feel your love and presence more than makes up for it.

If I am persecuted let it be only because others see you in me,

And fill me with your love and healing which overcome any other hurts.

Amen

Being Assured of God’s Kingdom

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for living as God’s child for they have assurance they are part of God’s kingdom.”  (Matthew 5: 10)

Lord,

There may be those who hate me because I love you,

But I know your love overpowers their hatred.

Help me to love you with a love that disregards hatred,

And love me with your love that overcomes it.

Amen

Peace Beyond Understanding

“Blessed are those who have found God’s peace and extend that peace for they truly are God’s children.”  (Matthew 5: 9)

Father,

Thank you for making me your child and filling me with your amazing peace,

And that you give me your peace no matter what the challenges and stresses.

Accept me as your child, fill me with your peace,

And help me to bring others to that peace as you’ve brought me.

Amen

Seeing God

“Blessed are those whose hearts have been made pure for they will see God.”  (Matthew 5: 8)

Father,

Thank you that no matter my sins you forgive and make me pure.

And in that purity then I can see you.

Forgive my failures, purify me by your grace,

And let me see you in all your glory.

Amen

Receiving and Giving Grace

“Blessed are those who give others grace for they will receive grace.”  (Matthew 5: 7)

Lord,

When I have failed you have forgiven me, when I have sinned you have given me grace.

And though I will fall you will lift me up and give me your mercy I can never deserve.

When I am hurt by others help me to remember your forgiveness,

And help me to pass on the grace you have so freely given to me.

Amen

Gaining Gifts I Can Never Achieve

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst to be right with God, for they will find fulfillment.”  (Matthew 5: 6)

Father,

Thank you for accepting me even though I can never be perfect enough to deserve it.

And that as I seek to please you, you fill me with blessings beyond any I could gain.

Give me your peace, fill me with your joy, let me feel your love.

Help me to rest in your righteousness and gain that which I can never achieve.

Amen

Receiving All God’s Promises

“Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.”  (Matthew 5: 5)

Father,

Thank you that when I am powerless you show yourself most  powerful,

And when I am weakest you give me everything I could never give myself.

Give me your promises, bless me with your blessings.

Fill me with your confidence, help me to expect your unimaginable.

Amen

Comfort in Sorrow

“Blessed are those who mourn for they will find comfort.”  (Matthew 5: 4)

Father,

When I’ve felt I lost everything then I’ve found your greatest gifts.

When I’ve cried the hardest you’ve given me comfort that’s deepest.

Be with me in my times of sorrow, comfort me in my times of grief,

Give me eyes to see through the tears and hope beyond today.

Amen

Living in God’s Kingdom

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for they receive the kingdom of heaven.”  (Matthew 5: 3)

Father,

Thank you that when I am down you lift me up,

And when I feel worthless you show me your kingdom.

Let me live in your kingdom though I can never deserve it.

And fill me with your confidence though I can never create it.

Amen
